Description

His was a commission for a wonderful young man. I enjoyed every minute of it.

The body is referenced and David Bowie was used as inspiration for the face.

It's been a while since I've done traditional mediums and so I'm a little rusty...yet I'm still very happy with this...

So this guy is form a race called Dark Fae, he is not an Elf! The race does not conform to normal Elvish standards of lithe builds...they have heavier, more humanoid builds. I've been asked if this gent is Drow...he's not, if he were to be colored, he would indeed have the dark skin and white hair most associated with Drow, but his eyes are an icy blue, almost white.

The reason I'm explaining this is because I've been told that he's too bulky to be an Elf...*lol*

Anyway, I know that I referenced the body too much...I'm not practiced with male figures...but it's still a good start and I think I'll be drawing more guys from now on...;) Also, the background was made deliberately spare.

Hope you all enjoy!

Nice drawing; the musculature looks great. :)

Nice one though the face doesn't really work with the actual body... The body looks heavily referenced due to its very realistic aspect and too muscled for the very thin head which doesn't look referenced (even if you've used one). The nose looks a little bit off, the jaws should be larger and the mouth looks odd.... You should use a ref for the face aswell (I know that you've used David Bowie, but it's a little bit too distorted as it is now, the head doesn't fit the body...) and stay close to the original face features. Btw, David Bowie was a very thin guy so it would have looked strange even if the face was drawn in a very realistic way ;) Another reference would work better maybe (for the head or body)....
Nice technique :)

Funny, the moment I saw him I thought 'Bowie'! XD Great job at capturing a likeness without exploiting the reference. I think my only real problems is the hair line and jaw line; it doesn't seem to fit the rest of the character. I think it's the mix of realism and your more stylish characteristics of his face and hair. His skin has a very realistic texture with a fair amount of detail, then his hair is just lacking that, very flat and low on shadows, with a rather abrupt, low, hairline. It's a unique sort of mix of styles, but I'm not sure if I like it, especially in the area where the shadow of the body isn't hitting the hair on the back of his neck. I think if you could be a little more consitent it would all come together.

Thank you so much for your feedback...^_^ I got the same critiques at CA.

Diane: I had actually originally used a much more realistic jawline...the client asked me to thin it out and then asked to thin it out more. I had also originally given him a more lithe body type, but the client told me he was more build. I noticed the nose recently. he's supposed to be looking down, so you wouldn't really see the left nostril...right now, his nose is more on a face that would be looking straight. Bowie was chosen because of his lips...:) The client wanted them thin like that.

Deliciae: Thank you...:) I have so many issues with the hair...I really wanted it more realistic, but it's white and I didn't know how to make it look white with shading. This is my first time really rendering a male body other than from a live subject. I'm not familiar with the male contours and so I referenced, thing is, I now see that I over referenced it....I should have done like the face and just used the body type as an observation rather than transferring the shape and then playing a little with the proportions. If you have anywhere were I can learn how to render white hair properly, I would love to see it.

Thank you everyone, I truly appreciate the critiques!
